Indigenous traditions

Banda de 8°va de Corpus
Sugar cane liquor, the drum, and the pingullo (a type of local flute) are constant in these Andean parties. This painting represents the Salasacas native group that immigrated from Bolivia during the Inca invasion. Several groups will join together outside of the village while each one plays their music and practices their dancing

Banda de Pueblo
The very traditional band expanded at coast and Andean range mainly. These neighbors train as much as possible after their work and provide fun and happiness during the parties that happen all year round. This village band is from the very high Andes mountains. They are walking through the paramo or the high barren plains, above 13.000 feet meeting at the main party area.

Ancestral Market
Indian markets are characterized by their multicolors presentations. Its a Sunday and all the surrounding villages must visit the market. Once you have purchased supplies for the week, its time to talk and chat a bit with the friends.

Ribbon Dancer
Traditional Ecuadorian Andean dancer of the Octava de Corpus. The 8th and last day of celebration of the Corpus Christi Holiday. A name introduced by the Spanish colonizers. This has been occuring as much as 350 years before Christ (Jama Coaque Culture) we can observe in many ceramic dolls this type of clothing that represents a very well dressed priest. The highlands represents the condor as the main flying bird in the Andes. Previously this holiday was Inty Raymi, the Sun's party. These days you mainly see them is Pujili, near Latacunga City, Capital of Cotopaxi Province

Diabla de Pillaro
Ecuador begins the year with La Diablada de Pillaro Holiday. An agricultural county in Tungurahua Province. South of Quito.
From January 1 to 6 there are parades and dancing groups with village bands all over

Cencerro. Aruchicos dress
The poncho and the Cencerro are two of the tools to dance an ARUCHICO. The oldest folkloric dancers remind us of in our Andes.
There are 6 belts in the upper part and 12 belts in the lower part of a cow skin carcass connected to their shoulders.
These dancers remind of us the old dancers of the Inti Raymi feast, before the Spanish conquerors. Later on, they include the zamarro or a second pant made of sheep or goat because of the extreme cold of high altitude. This happens mainly in the province of Pichincha and Imbabura whose capitals are Quito and Ibarra during Saint John and Saint Peter Holidays. They play the guitar and wear a mask and a hat with ribbons.
The noisy bells are very melodic and unique.
These elements represent the good shaman's priests and the good spirits. The noisy bells scare the bad spirits from the area.

Sword Billed Hummingbird
This typical hummingbird from the Andes range, lives at San Jorge Quito gardens. Something really attractive is his long bill, enormous for a hummingbird. They pollinate mainly the passion fruit and the datura which are common in San Jorge.
Painted Ecuadorian Hillstar
This is the only hummer that is able to adapt to the harsh condition of 5000 meters above sea level.
At this altitude, there are not many food choices. One resource of fast fuel so necessary in this latitude is the Chuquiragua another is orange colored Asteraceae, known as the always alive Ecuadorian plant.
